Scarborough Field Naturalists Society (SFNS) was founded in 1889. We are a group of amateur naturalists with interests throughout the spectrum of natural history. There are members at all levels of knowledge, from interested beginners to those with specialist knowledge in their chosen fields. The principal aim of the society is to record the wildlife of the Scarborough District, and to educate by means of an annual programme of indoor lectures and outdoor meetings in the local area.
A series of indoor evening meetings is held, usually on the second (or forth) Tuesday of the month, when visiting lecturers give presentations about a wide variety of wildlife and environmental topics. Meetings are currently held at The Qdos Suite, Scarborough Rugby Club, Scalby Road, Scarborough.
Outdoor meetings and excursions are held throughout the year and will be announced on the Calendar. Additional outdoor meetings are arranged during the year and these are announced either via the newsletter or e-mail. Records collected reported to the Society are used for local environmental and conservation purposes and are ultimately passed to The Yorkshire Naturalist’s Union to compliment a county-wide database. Members and non-members can contribute their records using the Reporting Tool.
We would encourage anyone with an interest in the natural world around them to take a look at our Calendar, choose a talk that is of particular interest (or just the next one on the list), and come along to see what we are all about. Membership is open to anyone with an interest in wildlife wishing to contribute or to learn more about the local natural history. Children under 16 years of age must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
