Tophill Low for birdwatching

<p><em>‘Winter birdwatching at Tophill Low. This is a reserve based around two reservoirs but also includes marshes and pools. It is a good site for ducks, grebes, kingfisher and maybe even an otter’.</em></p> <p><em> </em></p> <p><em>The reserve has toilets.  There is no cafe so bring pack up! All access is on paths although some can be muddy.</em></p> <p><em> </em></p> <p><em>Entrance fee is £3.50 per person (bring cash as I cannot remember if it accepts cards). </em></p> <p><em> </em></p> <p><em>The reserve is all on the flat and most watching is from hides. <p>A chance to learn a bit about wood pasture with Sam Newton and to find out about White-clawed crayfish and the plan to create a haven for them from YWT project officer Vanessa Barlow. The evening will consist of a walk round the farm with our two guides followed by a pot luck supper at Rock House, so bring something that you can share around of the edible variety. There is a number of chairs but if you have a collapsible chair please bring one.</p> <p>The walk will include some uneven terrain, boggy areas and a steep slope to climb, so please come prepared and make sure you bring suitable footwear. The site is also good for bats so as it gets dark we should be able to identify a few species while we have supper. We will be focusing on the top of the beach but not directly under the cliffs so hard hats are not mandatory. Please bring waterproofs and GOOD footwear as we may have to paddle across the Beck and the rocks can be slippy. It is a 300 metre walk and 50m descent to/from the car park on tarmac road – if this is a problem we can arrange for dropping nearer – contact leader.</p> <p>You can bring pack up or buy food at the Youth Hostel (or both). Bat survey Scalby Cut LNR

<p>We will be carrying out a point survey in response to Robert Weatherley’s request for some bat information on Scalby cut. We will try recording at least 5 points across the site to see what bats are using the site. In addition to anyone with a suitable bat recorder we will also be looking for some ‘minders’ who are prepared to assist and accompany those that have. It should be an interesting site with open fields, woodland and also the stream running the length of it.
