This is a reserve based around two reservoirs but also includes marshes and pools. It is a good site for ducks, grebes, kingfisher and maybe even an otter’.

The reserve has toilets. There is no cafe so bring pack up! All access is on paths although some can be muddy.

Entrance fee is £3.50 per person (bring cash as I cannot remember if it accepts cards).

The reserve is all on the flat and most watching is from hides. Bring binoculars (and telescopes if you have them).

It is a large site but you can just cherry pick the nearby bits for those of us less mobile.

Message from John Hume:-

My ad-hoc field outings will be on 7th May to Riccaldale to see the bluebells and other spring flowers (weather permitting). Meeting at 10am on the roadside verge just before Pockley village SE63506 85476. It will be a 5.5 mile walk so everyone needs to be reasonably fit! Just one uphill section. This can go on the website and out via email. Future excursions after this will be posted on the SFN WhatsApp group only, with maybe only 24-48 hours notice as they will be dependent on weather, how I am feeling and whether I can think of somewhere to go. Please contact John on 07717 220152.
</text>
<dtstart><date>2024-05-07</date></dtstart><dtend><date>2024-05-08</date></dtend><categories><parameters>
<text>en-GB</text>
</parameters><text>Field Trips</text></categories><contact/><sequence><integer>0</integer></sequence>
<x-cost-type><unknown>free</unknown></x-cost-type></properties></vevent><vevent><properties><uid><text>ai1ec-3032@scarboroughfieldnats.co.uk</text></uid><dtstamp><date-time>2026-07-13T21:44:43Z</date-time></dtstamp>
<text>Keldy Bat box check.</text>

<text>
We will be checking the bat boxes here. For our new members Pauline served on the Scarborough Nats committee for many years and was also an avid botany and butterfly surveyor.

”

Just to let you all know that I am planning to hold a final Open Garden in memory of Pauline at Broxa this year, on Saturday 3rd August(on what would have been her 70th Birthday), between 2.00 and 4:30pm. at 2, Red Briar Cottages Broxa YO13 0BP

There will be good company, cakes etc., a book stall, plant sales and the garden’s phlox should be in full flower.

There is no entrance fee, but donations towards refreshments would be welcomed.

If you cannot make it on the day, but wish to make a donation to APF in memory of Pauline, you can find details on https://www.actionpf.org/information-and-support/personal-stories

So far over £5000 has been raised for APF research.

As it is the final Open Garden at Broxa I am holding a special raffle and there are two amazing prizes. Pauline purchased an award winning Phlox watercolour ( value £1200) and a limited edition print ( value £150) and raffle tickets can be purchased at £10 each and I hope to draw the winning ticket on the day. 1st Prize: the original painting. 2nd prize: The Print ( photos attached).

I hope you feel this is a good idea. I will also invite RHS Hardy Plant Society members as well as friends of Pauline for this final celebration.

If you have ever wondered what a beautiful pebble on the beach is and it’s story you will find this interesting.

Tony Kearsley a local geologist has offered to lead a trip along the beach where we will look at some pebbles and hear the story of how they have travelled from Cumbria, northern England, Scotland and maybe even Norway!

Low tide is midday. We will be focusing on the top of the beach but not directly under the cliffs so hard hats are not mandatory. Please bring waterproofs and GOOD footwear as we may have to paddle across the Beck and the rocks can be slippy. It is a 300 metre walk and 50m descent to/from the car park on tarmac road – if this is a problem we can arrange for dropping nearer – contact leader.

You can bring pack up or buy food at the Youth Hostel (or both). The Youth Hostel have kindly given us use of the classroom so if it is wet we may retire there after a pebble foraging expedition.
