Dr Mather has the largest private collection of bird specimens in the UK, collected over many years of birdwatching, usually of found dead birds or from the shooting fraternity. He outlined his work at the Knaresborough Ringing Station, and with the aid of photographs of his preserved specimens, gave a fascinating account of some lesser-known aspects of bird biology, including nestling development, moult, skeletal structure, racial and sexual dimorphism, gynandromorphism, plumage aberration and parasites.
The President thanked Dr Mather for a thoroughly interesting talk. The meeting closed at 9-05pm.
