MINUTES OF MEETING HELD ON: 26th January 2016 |

VENUE: University of Hull Scarborough Campus. ATTENDANCE: 30 Members & guests. CHAIRMAN: John Hume, President. APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE: MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING(s): Minutes from 12th January were presented on screen and accepted with amendments. MATTERS ARISING: None. CORRESPONDENCE RECEIVED: YNU paperwork and conference details. YGS event information. ANNOUNCEMENTS: The President announced a change in the programme. Brian Walker would present ‘A World of Trees’ on 11th October and he would give a Presidential Address 0n 6th December. Robin Hopper announced that Jayne Payne, formerly a Society member and local badger worker and campaigner was unfortunately leaving the area. The Secretary would write to her on the Society’s behalf. |
RECORDS AND REPORTS: Brian Walker reported a small white egret was making frequent use of Keld Head Pond on the west edge of Pickering. Janice Morritt reported a heron continued to use the Peasholm Glen and a goosander had been seen. Peregrines had been seen on the Castle Headland and a plucking perch was spotted. Rock pipit had been seen on the harbour wall. Robin Hopper commented on a quantity of oil in the harbour probably from the recently stricken fishing vessel in the harbour. Geof Edmond (RSPCA) said no oiled birds had been reported and that a spillage boom was placed around the vessel. He would make further enquiries. 1000 pink-footed geese were seen heading north. Geof Edmond reported on the recent common seal release following recovery at the Sea Life Centre. A grey seal pup very underweight had been picked up by the centre today. Small white egret was still on the Carrs. John Hume had seen a short-eared owl in the North Bay. Rob Stark had seen Goshawk displaying over local woodland. Melanie Earle had a barn owl fly in front of the car south of North Moor on her way to the meeting. Mild weather had brought lots of insects and a bat out at North Moor. Pauline Popely reported 150 geese over Broxa.

SPEAKER FOR THE EVENING:
John Shannon of the East Yorkshire Rivers Trust spoke about ‘The River Derwent Project’ John described some of the problems facing the Yorkshire Derwent, its important status and some of the innovative ways the Trust was using to make changes.
Following questions from members the President gave the vote of the thanks for a very interesting and informative talk and announced the date of the next meeting as 23rd February.
