Bat survey of Seamer Mere – Sept 10th

There is considerable amount of work being done by SBC regarding trees and shrubs around the Mere. The Council is keen to add various bird and bat boxes. We will do a point survey of the site to determine which bats are using the area. Contact Nick Gibbons 07790 113025 if you are interested. Meet at the cafe at the north end of the mere.

Boat Trip October 1st

We have the Queensferry Boat booked for 1st October It is booked at 9.45am for a 10am departure. Subject to weather we will go south to Gristhorpe Cliffs to the seals and then a little further south before coming back looking for cetaceans and birds. Note we are not ‘chumming’. Return at 1pm. Meet at West Pier which is opposite the Harbour Bar (option of ice creams or hot chocolate on our return depending on the weather!). £18 (maybe less if we get more people). Wykeham and Broadhead bat box checks

We will be checking the bat boxes at Wykeham and Broadhead. A chance to see some bats and also for those going for Level 2 licenses to do some handling and identification. Meet at the Hackness Village Hall (GR SE967900) area at 10.00am. We will be following IUCN guidelines for protection of the bats from covid and a briefing will be given at the beginning of the meeting.

We will be checking the bat boxes at Keldy and Cropton. A chance to see some bats and also for those going for Level 2 licenses to do some handling, endoscope work and identification. Meet at the Cropton Cabins car park (GR SE756917) area at 10.00am. We will be following IUCN guidelines for protection of the bats from covid and a briefing will be given at the beginning of the meeting. We may go on to check the boxes at Rosedale if we get the permission so could be a full day.

After a walk round Deepdale this year with Brian most of us are still trying to absorb the wealth of information on how to identify some of the trees we have, particularly the numerous forest softwoods. Brian will try and reinforce our abilities to better understand this highly topical subject as we are all being encouraged to plant more trees.

Swifts – joint meeting with SBN. 8th Nov 2022 @ Scarborough Rugby Club

It has been three years since we decided to start a Swift group in conjuction with the Scarborough Bird Club. We have been undertaking Swift surveys and carrying out various conservation activities such as putting up swift boxes over this period. We will review what progress we have made and where the project is likely to take us. This is a joint meeting with Scarborough Bird Club.
