Curlew monitoring request

Hi Everyone

Keith Wimbush is taking on the task of recording any Curlew records for our area. Curlews are undergoing a massive decline and there is a national project trying to understand all the reasons for this. They are looking at getting a better understand of the distribution of this species and how successful any breeding attempts are. Every bit of data you can supply is valuable even if it is not a confirmed breeding record. Any pairs, display behaviour etc is worth recording please.

Below is what Keith would like re the data:-

The information I  will be looking for is pretty straightforward and is not dissimilar to the BTO BBC scheme, but requiring just some basic facts and information;

  1. Time, date and location of observation, plus grid reference if possible
  2. Number of pairs at that location.
  3. Evidence of display, incubation, food carrying or reaction to predators.
  4. Type of habitat and proximity to any human disturbance.
  5. Evidence of either ground or air predators at time of observations and identity of predator(s) if possible.
  6. Evidence of any other ground nesting bird species at that location.
  7. Evidence of confirmed breeding and number of young seen.

It would be good to build up a picture of what is happening in order to potentially progress the data I have already started to record some local sightings and pair occupations of territories in the Stoupe Brow/ Ravenscar areas and there are 4 pairs back on territories, exactly the same as 2025.

Please let Keith know of anything you see.
