SCARBOROUGH FIELD NATURALISTS.

MINUTES OF MEETING HELD ON: 13th October 2015

VENUE: University of Hull Scarborough Campus.                          ATTENDANCE:  18 Members & guests.

CHAIRMAN:  Brian Walker

APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE:  Brian Cockerill and Robin Hopper.

MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING(s):  Minutes from26th May presented on screen and accepted.

MATTERS ARISING:  None.

CORRESPONDENCE RECEIVED:  None.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:  Mick Carroll is still in the Hospice and expressed a wish, via Brian Walker,  that the next president be a woman.

Brian Walker asked that we thanked Robin Hopper for all his hard work over the years which Brian explained had gone beyond the normal duties of a president. The society is in a far stronger position than it would have been otherwise.

Brian also asked that we thank Mick Carroll for his work over the years.

All the officers had agreed to stay on but not necessarily in the same role. Volunteers are welcome to join or help the committee. We still need a president.

Details of the forthcoming outing had been circulated and posted on the website.

RECORDS AND REPORTS:

2 Buzzards and 1 Goshawk had been seen at Highdales along with Sulphur cap mushrooms.

A hedgehog had been seen by members just outside tonight's venue.

15 Southern Hawker Dragonflies had been seen during the week commencing 28th Sept in a Scarborough garden.

During the same week an Adder had been seen in Wykeham forest.

Dead Fox and Dead Badger on Cloughton Bank by roadside.

SPEAKER FOR THE EVENING: Carol Hobart – Amateur mycologist and member of the British Mycological Society (BMS).

TITLE/SUBJECT OF TALK: 'Fungi throughout the year'.

MAIN CONTENT OF TALK: 

The talk was intended to give an insight of fungi, their habitats and lifecycle. A brief description of the classification and reproductive strategy was given with examples and slides.

The conservation of fungi was also covered. It was explained why the BMS had adopted the position of discouraging collection of fungi for reasons other than research or identification. Carol pointed out that other wildlife societies do not advise on the edibility of the wildlife they were trying to conserve.

Acting chair Brian Walker gave the vote of thanks.

The meeting closed at 9-15pm.
