VENUE: University of Hull Scarborough Campus. ATTENDANCE: 21 Members & guests. CHAIRMAN: Brian Walker APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE: MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING(s): Minutes from 24th November were presented on screen and accepted. MATTERS ARISING: None. CORRESPONDENCE RECEIVED: None ANNOUNCEMENTS: The President announced the death of former society member Gwenda Wadsworth who had passed away over the Christmas period. Len Auckland said a few words about Gwenda’s commitment to the society before Parkinson’s disease made coming to meetings impossible. The President also spoke about the recent death of local teacher and former BBC Wildlife Poet of the Year, David Smart. The President read one of John Smarts poems in memory of members lost in the past year.

RECORDS AND REPORTS: Brian Walker spoke about the activities of the Derwent Hunt, who had hunted 2 foxes in Thornton le Dale in recent months and asked members to report similar occurrences to the RSPCA or the League Against Cruel Sports. Janice Morritt reported heron and kingfisher from Peasholm and red-throated diver and red-necked grebe in the harbour. Robin Hopper reported up to 80 white-fronted geese at Seamer Tip Pool and between 30 & 40 whooper & mute swans at Ruston Bridge. Geof Edmond had seen 12 whooper swans on Cayton Carrs and a dark-bellied brent goose at Harwood Dale Pond. Grey seals had pups at Ravenscar and 5 common seals were being returned to the wild on 14th January. Steve Bushell reported a kestrel roosting in the his barn near Allerston and a waterlogged jack snipe in the wood there. Phillip Winter reported a RTA stoat at Muston. Melanie Earle reported 3 barn owls on the Long Causeway at Wykeham and a party of redwings and fieldfares. A barn owl had been seen north of Hutton Buscel and around 50 lapwings on fields at Wykeham North Moor.

SPEAKER FOR THE EVENING: Members Review of 2015. Informal presentations as detailed below.
Phillip Winter showed pictures of elephant hawk and buff tip moth caterpillars he had found and reared.
Brian Walker reported in the increase in deer species in recent years and showed a short presentation on identification. He also gave a short presentation on woodland designations.
Steve Bushell gave an excellent report for the year on wildlife activity at Broadhead Farm. Copies of the report were available for members to read.
John Hume presented two videos from the past. One was his own film of bird ringing and the other a historic film about the ‘climmers’ of Bempton.
